Tour Plan
Take the road trip with us and experience Sumadija (Woodlands), a fertile region known for its forests and fruits. Legend has it that the woods of old were so dense and impenetrable that one would walk through them for days without even a glimpse of the sun. It was this terrain that gave birth to heroes of the Serbian uprising against the disproportionally more powerful Ottoman empire. The purpose of our journey through this realm of outstanding nature is to rediscover those local heroes who regained their nation’s independence, to learn about the rise of a small mostly rural country Serbia followed by obtaining the status of a recognized kingdom, and to see how the spirit of old times traditions still lives in this part of the country within collective historical memory and lifestyle practices. In the town of Orasac, where the First Uprising began, you will have a chance to hear a notorious tale of Black George – Karadjordje, the fearless leader of the rebels, but also to see the centuries-old oak tree ‘Takovski grm” that bares the testimony to these events engraved in its body. While driving through the magnificent mountain Bukulja you will learn why trees take up such a prominent place in the rich Serbian mythology. Further down our road will appear the city of Arandjelovac whose founder was Milos Obrenovic, the head of the Second Uprising and the first ruler of the independent 19th-century Serbian state. In the middle of this charming town nestling among the woods is Bukovicka Spa, well-known for its thermal springs. You will enjoy the walk through a park which is decorated with sculptures brought from all around the world. No trip to Sumadija would be complete without some exquisite traditional bites and a glass or two of homemade brandy sljivovica so we’ll take a break in a lovely welcoming inn. Intoxicated by a day spent in nature, puzzled by history, and rewarded with tasty food at the end of the day, you will have time to calmly contemplate the new experience gained while gazing at the same beautiful scenery on your way back to the city.
